The Ten Commandments: God’s Blueprint for Humanity

Often times I keep asking myself why am I not getting what I want? Have I not done enough? Am I not enough? The List is endless. It is at such times that it becomes essential for me as a human to turn back to my Bible and ask the questions to the One who will answer.

Cami Oetman does the same as she unravels God’s providence and His blueprint for us by giving us 10 simple rules on how to lead our lives. When I first read the Ten Commandments I may have been no more than 6 or 7 and we were made to learn it. I couldn’t really understand the true significance until I was much older but it was only when Ms. Oetman broke it down through her amazing understanding that I understood that the Ten Commandments are more than Just Rules.

The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus Chapter 20.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. — Here what God is saying is that there is no path to Him except through Him. We have to learn to believe in Him. We have to learn to have faith in His presence rather than images of Him who we have not seen.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. — The message here is abundantly clear. We make the idols. We are the creators of those images and idols. How then can we worship that which we created?

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Cami goes on to explain the next couple of verses:

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. — Which essentially means that swearing on God’s name or using His name inappropriately will incur God’s wrath.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

In short God has commanded us to allow ourselves Rest and Peace of mind at the end of the week and showed us the way by following it Himself.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

This is the Only Commandment with a Promise. God gave us parents so that they may manifest a quarter of the feelings our heavenly father has for us. This shows us that God in all His glory will never allow his children to fend for themselves instead covering them with his protective cover.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

Cami beautifully describes this through an anecdote that from her trip to the Philippines. (A must watch!)

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

The last four commandments are more about us being more socially responsible and that is why God has told us to be faithful in relationships with our partners, friends and our neighbors.
